Alix of Bohemia’s Island Romance

by Kat Herriman

Alix of Bohemia

Fashion designer Alix Verley knows a thing or two about the gypset lifestyle. Her eponymous line, Alix of Bohemia, is the new go-to for free spirits looking to add a touch of wanderlust to their wardrobe. Recently picked up by Moda Operandi and Bergdorf Goodman, her one-of-a-kind patchwork jackets and breezy cotton dresses demonstrate the young seamstress’s knack for mixing clashing patterns in delightful ways. Her inspiration is taken directly from her travels. Here, the up-and-coming designer shares a peek at her most recent adventure—an intimate wedding in the Bahamas.

1

“The moment we landed in Harbour Island and made our way to our little hotel, Runway Hill, (via golf cart, of course) my entourage tore open the trunks of Bohemia and dress-up commenced. Barefoot selfies in the Bahamian grass!”

2

“Morning breakfast on the terrace with a sublime view of the aqua ocean. One must dress properly for breakfast, and in this case, properly means the Chloe dress with a red leather tie. I actually ended up selling this dress off my back during this trip!”

3

“We made our way to the heavenly Dunmore hotel for lunch, feasting on fish tacos and conch ceviche. Afterwards, we were so stuffed that relaxing in the sun was the only way to regain our strength. A seersucker romper is only the appropriate gear for such an endeavor.”

4

“My dear friend Tatiana is an amazing film director and always manages to capture the perfect light! Julia and I, both in Bohemia, on the beach in the hazy afternoon sun. “

5

“A peek inside my suitcase. This piece mirrors the Bahamanian landscape.”

6

“The afternoon of the big day, after many glasses of rose and a dip in the ocean. The bride to be (also in Bohemia!) gets a massage before the evening festivities.”

7

“When I’m not sewing my fingers to the bone, I’m drawing stuff. My gift to the bride and groom? Menus I designed for the occasion. I love the kissing fish! I also gifted the bride a wedding jacket with the same motif.”

8

“After a joyful ceremony in a tiny pink church with fabulous music, we made our way to the reception at the Ocean View Club, where we were escorted down to the beach, instructed to remove our shoes and seated under an enormous candle lit tent. We danced all night to the tunes of Daddy D! Truly beach party heaven.”

9

“The day after the wedding, we boarded a boat and headed to Mann island. Despite the name, it is a not a place to find a boyfriend, it is deserted as can be! We snorkeled in turquoise waters and found much inspiration in this incredible starfish. I felt like a Gauguin Tahitian girl.”

10

“Landing back in New York, after way too much sun and many Goombay Smashes (a lethal frozen rum drink). After so much sunshine, the arrival terminal feels like an artificial alien landscape!”
