Victoria’s Secret Angel Jasmine Tookes Cried When She Had to Give Up the Fantasy Bra
Last night, after what seemed like months of anticipation, the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show finally premiered on television with an hour-long spectacle that included plenty of over-the-top lingerie ensembles and long-legged models. Among the show’s highlights: Karlie Kloss’s triumphant return, Alessandra Ambrosio’s sentimental goodbye, Harry Styles’s dance moves, and, of course, the $2 million fantasy bra.
This year’s version of the famous, diamond-encrusted lingerie set, named “Champagne Nights,” includes diamonds, yellow sapphires, and blue topaz set in 18 karat gold, weighing more than 600 carats and took almost 350 hours to create. Wearing the creation—the highest honor in Victoria’s Secret land—was Lais Ribeiro, a 27-year-old Brazilian model and Victoria’s Secret veteran. Ribeiro was visibly ecstatic about the privilege, telling W last month, “It is such an honor to be chosen out of 60 models. It is a very special thing.”
That much is a given, but how does it feel to pass on the honor after wearing the bra yourself? For Jasmine Tookes, who donned the fantasy bra last year, the emotional reaction involves tears. “You have no idea,” Tookes said about seeing Ribeiro wear the bra. “When they put the video out about the bra, every time I watched it I would start crying. She is one of my best friends, and is just so amazing.”
The pair even took something of a celebratory trip to Thailand post-show, joined by fellow Angels Josephine Skriver and Sara Sampaio. “It was amazing,” Tookes said. “In Thailand, we would give speeches around the table and every time it would be like, ‘You deserve it Lais.’ Everyone loves her so much. And Bali was one of my number one bucket list places to go. I always try to [take a break after the show], and luckily this time we had four days to relax. It was good to relax on the beach and have some cocktails.”
Romee Strijd, meanwhile, was still feeling the effects of jetlag from China on Tuesday, just hours before the show’s television debut, as she did promo duties at the brand’s Fifth Avenue flagship to show-off their new collaboration with Balmain, which hits stores today. “The jetlag has been really affecting me, I have to say,” she said. “It is the farthest I’ve ever been. I’m awake every night from one to five a.m., and I am not doing anything productive.”
Still, the excitement seemed to be keeping her going, and with good reason: this year marked her first time opening a segment in the show—and on an ultra long runway, no less. “I was really, really nervous because it was my first time opening a segment, but it went good, I think! It felt great,” she said. “I liked [the longer runway] because sometimes it goes so fast, but now we had a little more time to enjoy it.”
