Those partial to sparkle will find themselves besotted with “Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels” (February 18 to June 5), at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York. Standout baubles include Elizabeth Taylor’s amethyst, coral, and diamond geometric bracelet; a coiled ruby cuff commissioned by Marlene Dietrich; and a diamond and ruby poodle brooch like one worn by Jackie Kennedy. “All the pieces are from collectors who appreciated ingenuity; they understood that Van Cleef was not just about big glamorous rocks but innovative design,” says curator Sarah Coffin. Though, as Princess Grace of Monaco’s 39-carat marquise- and pear-shaped diamond tiara (left) proves, there’s nothing wrong with a big glamorous rock.
