The Gerard Malanga image of Andy Warhol on the bottom of the pool at Jason Pomeranc’s Thompson LES hotel is just the tip of the iceberg: Located on New York’s Lower East Side, the hotel also features limited-edition Ryan McGinness prints in the penthouses, Peter Halley installations in the lobby, and light boxes showcasing prints by famously reclusive photographer Lee Friedlander—who has never before licensed an image—above every bed. The project’s interior designer, Jim Walrod, said that convincing Friedlander to participate was worth it even though most guests don’t know what they’re looking at. “I’m sure 95 percent of them go, ‘Oh, that’s a nice headboard,’” says Walrod.
