If the aughties had a statement cake it was probably the Mille Crepes, a $75 confection constructed of twenty layers of crepes, custard and sugar and sold at the Lady M Cake Boutique on East 78th Street. New decade, new cake shop: meet The Best Chocolate Cake in the World. Built of meringue and chocolate mousse and topped with a thin layer of ganache, the $56 dessert was created by chef Carlos Braz Lopes in Lisbon in 1987 and lands at its own shop on Spring Street this week.
Our editors were divided: Some were fond of the “cookie/candy texture” while others deemed it “not overly sweet” and a couple of us thought it was “cloyingly chocolate-y.” Try it for yourself when the Best Chocolate Cake in the World shop opens on Friday. 55a Spring Street (Lafayette Street), (212) 343-2253.
