May 18: Follow the Leader
These days, the phrase “cult film” refers to just that—films about cults—and no longer only to cinema that draws a small, fervent following. On the heels of the highly acclaimed Martha Marcy May Marlene (about a woman who has escaped from a cult) and in advance of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Scientology opus, The Master, comes Sound of My Voice (in wide release on May 18), a tense, dark drama in which starlet Brit Marling plays an apostlelike figure who convinces her followers that she comes from the future.
