Met Gala 2017: Selena Gomez and the Weeknd Make Their Red Carpet Debut as a Couple

And she actually got him to crack a smile.

Part of the beauty of the Met Gala red carpet is that it is a place where the unexpected is the norm. Selena Gomez reinforced that reputation as she and her boyfriend the Weeknd made their official red carpet debut at fashion’s biggest night. Dressed in a sequin-strewn Coach gown, a brand she’s currently serving as an ambassador for, the actress and singer cozied up next to the alt-R&B crooner, who was outfitted in a black tuxedo with a coordinated bedazzled boutonniere. What was even more notable than their red carpet debut as a couple though was their poses.

Much has been written about the couple’s body language — but at the Met Gala, the Weeknd actually cracked a smile — a look that’s even rarer for the artist than a tuxedo. Last year, when Abel Tesfaye attended the event, which was themed “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” the artist kept a poker face as he posed alongside then-girlfriend Bella Hadid.

This year, however, Tesfaye was captured not only grinning but hugging Selena and cuddling up to her on the iconic red steps leading into the event.

Of course, he has plenty to smile about. Not only is he currently in the throes of a world tour, which Gomez has been watching from the sidelines, but he’s also poised to dominate the radio for another reason: his recent collaboration with Lana Del Rey, “Lust for Life,” which serves as the title track for her upcoming album. It might be time to rethink that whole “Lonely” boy act.
