In Bed With Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen

The designing twins’ first fragrances for Elizabeth and James take you to their idea of Nirvana

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have discovered their idea of Nirvana, though for a change, it has nothing to do with Kurt Cobain. The designing duo have created twin fragrances for their Elizabeth and James label: Nirvana White and Nirvana Black—a fresh floral musk and dark spicy wood, respectively.

More than the grunge era, the twins said the fragrances were meant to reflect their own personal experience of transcendence: Lying in bed in their favorite worn-in Duxiana sheets. “The original inspiration image was an old picture of two people’s imprints left on a bed,” Ashley explained during the launch event at Locanda Verde in New York. “The two people are gone and you don’t know if it had been a couple or close friends or what their genders were, but to us it was about this idea of modern intimacy and that people have choices for who that person is.”

The campaign image shot by Ryan McGinley puts a playful spin on the bed theme, with a bare model and fuzzy puppy lounging lazily on white sheets. Heaven.

Elizabeth and James Nirvana White and Nirvana Black ($22 – $75), will be available officially January 2014; select Sephora stores will have a special pre-sale December 13-25.
