Margot Robbie Reacts to Her First Oscar Nomination for I, Tonya
She celebrated with champagne instead of coffee thanks to the time difference in Australia.
While most of the Oscar nominees took in this morning’s announcement over a cup of coffee, Margot Robbie was celebrating with champagne thanks to the time difference in her home country, Australia. The I, Tonya star was naturally ecstatic, as you can see in a video captured by her brother Cameron Robbie. Robbie was all smiles as she toasted with a few friends on the dance floor, following the Australian premiere of the film which traces the rise and fall of real-life figure skater Tonya Harding.
“There’s nothing I could say that articulates how proud I am of this one #whatamoment #academyawardnomaninee!,” the actress’ brother wrote in a caption of an Instagram photo of the pair hugging. Earlier in the evening, while taking the red carpet to promote I, Tonya, Robbie revealed that she wasn’t stressing over the Academy Awards’ nominations. “I’m pretty jetlagged, I don’t think I’ll be losing sleep,” she told 9 News in reference to them. “I definitely need a good night’s sleep… Everything is already too good to be true and I don’t want to count on anything like that happening… It’s pretty nuts. Each year I’m like ‘wow, next year couldn’t be crazier than this year’ and then it gets crazier.”
No doubt, things are only going to get crazier for Robbie in the wake of her first Oscar nomination — but they’ll be a different change of pace considering how hard Robbie worked to transform into Harding. “I did four months of training, five days a week, four hours a day,” she told W last fall. “On Christmas Eve, I was at the rink. And now I actually really miss it. I kept my ice skates—but I said goodbye to a whole world of pain that I didn’t realize came along with figure skating.”
That was nothing though, apparently, compared to Robbie’s work towards adopting Harding’s voice. “Once I put on the wig, which altered my hairline, and bleached my eyebrows, I started to see Tonya,” she said. “The hardest part was losing my natural laugh. It needed to be Tonya’s laugh. I couldn’t do a triple axel like Tonya, but I was able to master her laugh.”
