Since the country singer Kacey Musgraves’s major-label debut in 2013, she’s been positioning herself as the anti-Faith Hill, with sassy lyrics that question religious authorities and tell of smoking pot. Her second album, Pageant Material, dropped to critical acclaim last fall, and the 27-year-old is currently touring the U.S., stopping off in New York and Nashville in her signature sparkly tights. Today, Musgrave takes the stage at Billy Reid’s Shindig No. 6—a lineup that also includes Charles Bradley and Dylan Leblanc—at South by Southwest in Austin. Ahead of her performance, she shares her style hit list. Be warned: she’s not opposed to socks with sandals.

Three words that describe your style: Different every day.

Daily uniform: LuluLemon workout gear and basics.

Favorite store: It would be impossible for me to whittle it down to ONE favorite store, although I always love scouring local shops while traveling and one of the best of the best is Dolly Python in Dallas. It’s a must for oddities, vintage jewelry, and clothes.

Nighttime look: Depends on where I’m going but chunky black platform heels and an easy dress, or a good pair of jeans with a cute top and big earrings.

Style icons: Nancy Sinatra, Dale Evans.

Best recent discovery: Antique turquoise Navajo Squashblossoms.

Style pet peeve: Well, I can’t say it’s socks with sandals. Because I do that.

Last purchase: A studded, fringed, black leather cross-body YSL bag. And a $34 star print dress.

Lusting after: Opals.

What’s always in your bag: My Avène water spray and my chapstick. I start to freak out if my lips feel really dry and I don’t have anything with me.

Something you would never wear: Never say never but … pleated front khakis?

Prized possession: An antique, Victorian diamond ring I bought in Ireland and a pair of old spurs I was given on my 21st birthday.

Festival go-tos: Huge sunglasses, good denim cut-offs, my Teva sandals, and glow sticks.

Favorite brands: For cowboy boots: Lucchese. I recently collaborated on a boot collection with this Texas brand. It was the MOST fun and I’m super proud of them! For plant-based beauty: Tata Harper. For tees and basics: Wildfox and Bandit Brand. For workout essentials: LuluLemon. And I am dangerously obsessed with the new Gucci collection.

Spring wardrobe must-haves: Two staples for me in the spring are easy-but-stylish dresses that you can just throw on and go to lunch or style up for cocktails. That and a comfy, basic tee that can go with anything. The Raglan Shirt and The Lanna Knit Dress from Billy Reid are great examples of this!
