Jennifer Lopez Pledges to Donate $1 Million to Puerto Rico Hurricane Victims
Jennifer Lopez is doing her part to help rebuild Puerto Rico in the devastating wake of Hurricane Maria, which has reportedly left over a dozen people dead and thousands without electricity, water, and power. In a press conference with New York governor Andrew Cuomo today, the actress and artist announced that she will be donating $1 million of her own money—specifically, from profits of her Las Vegas residency shows—towards relief efforts.
“Given the loss and devastation, we need to pay attention to urgently support Puerto Rico and the Caribbean with donations and contributions,” she said in a statement. “Alex Roriguez and I, who are both New Yorkers, are using all our resources and relationships in entertainment, sports and business to garner support for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean…We are working day and night to identify the needs.”
Lopez is also urging everyone else to help out with the relief efforts. “What’s foremost in my mind and many others, is trying to figure out the best way to help,” she said. “Our island of Puerto Rico has been his by two of the most devastating hurricanes we’ve ever seen: Irma and Maria. Today, Puerto Rico needs our help. I urge you to support and donate to the efforts of the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rossello.”
This isn’t the first time that Jennifer Lopez has used her celebrity to raise awareness for Hurricane Maria. Three days ago Lopez posted a video to Instagram, informing her followers how they can donate and help. “Not my most glamorous look, I know,” she said in the video. “I’m working in Vegas right now, but that’s not really important. What’s on my mind is what’s going on in Puerto Rico. The devastation is beyond belief. Me and my cousin still haven’t been able to hear from our families over there. What’s foremost on my mind and many others’ is trying to figure out the best way to help. Puerto Rico has been hit by two of the most devastating hurricanes we’ve ever seen: Irma and Maria. Today Puerto Rico needs our help. I urge you to support and donate to the efforts of the first lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rossello. Together we can help build our island and the Caribbean. To donate go to www.unitedforpuertorico.com.”
Jennifer Lopez is the latest celebrity to pledge a donation to hurricane relief efforts this year. Last month, both Sandra Bullock and Leonardo DiCaprio announced they would be making $1 million donations Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Plus, next month on October 17, Beyoncé, who went to Houston to personally assist in relief efforts by distributing food and diapers will hold a relief concert alongside her husband Jay-Z at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
