The label Gypsy Sport made a loud splash this past September when designer Rio Uribe staged a guerrilla-style fashion show in Washington Square Park. It was the first time many in the fashion set had heard of the street- and sportswear label, but Gypsy Sport has been a favorite among the downtown VFiles crowd since it was founded in 2012. To present the brand’s Fall 2014 collection, which was inspired by the textiles Uribe saw on a trip through Mexico and is just now hitting stores, Uribe looked towards that very community to create a film. Filmmaker Mitch Moore, whose credits include videos for rapper Mykki Blanco, and designer Shayne Oliver of Hood by Air, both friends of Uribe’s, quickly came on board. “When Mitch and I first met we bonded over a fascination for Bollywood films,” explains Uribe. The two-minute long brand video, which is set to the tune of Hildgard von Bingen’s 11th-century “O Euchari In Leta Via,” features ten different “models,” including the singer LaFawndah, breakdancer Fishbonez, and YouTube personality Jorge “Gitoo” Wright. “It was important for me that we used real friends and Gypsy Sport customers in this video,” notes Uribe, who went through approximately 12 hours of landscape and architectural footage with Moore to choose that which would best complement the clothing, and to imply fun and positivity. “Fashion can be very elitist. This video is made to showcase various shapes, colors, and kinds of people, in space, having a good time—wearing Gypsy Sport.”
