Angelina Jolie has been stepping out more lately as she promotes her new film First They Killed My Father, which she directed, and an animated feature she co-produced called The Breadwinner. In doing so, she’s started opening more in the wake of the announcement that she and Brad Pitt are getting divorced after three years of marriage and over a decade of partnership — and she’s seemingly very forthright about their split. In a status update given to The New York Times, Jolie talks about the challenging separation.

“None of it’s easy,” she tells The NYT. “It’s very, very difficult, a very painful situation, and I just want my family healthy. Speaking on her home life, Jolie revealed that she considers her large family of six — including 16-year-old Maddox, 13-year-old Pax, 12-year-old Zahara, 11-year-old Shiloh, and 9-year-olds Knox Leon and Vivienne— to be her closest friends. “They’re the best friends I’ve ever had,” she says. “Nobody in my life has ever stood by me more.”

Jolie also expanded on her and Brad Pitt’s decision to get divorced, revealing that she had mulled it over for a long time before reaching one. “It took me a few months to realize that I was really going to have to do it. That there was going to have to be another base regardless of everything,” she told The NYT. “That there was going to have to be a home. Another home.”

Despite the fact that any divorce can only be fully understood by the parties involved, Jolie knows that there will be various takes on her own and it doesn’t phase her at all. “I never expect to be the one that everybody understands or likes,” she says, “And that’s O.K., because I know who I am, and the kids know who I am.”

While she’s completely fine with who she is, Jolie may be showing another side of her personality soon as she revealed her desire to do another comedy film. “I will get funny at some point,” she said. Apparently, that will happen as soon as the Maleficent 2 sequel arrives, which was recently announced. “That was a little funny,” she says.
