Nursing a child imposes all sorts of new order on a mother’s life. It warps not only time but diet, body, mind, beauty, and even fashion. The act of breastfeeding, when looked at in the French photographer Vincent Ferrané’s book Milky Way, which documents his wife’s months-long nourishment of their child chronologically over the seasons, also changes the look of and way a picture is taken. There’s a pose and styling to the starkly lit images that has the look and drama of fashion photography, but it’s one man’s way to participate, via looking through a camera lens, in what by nature he can’t. In the rumpled sheets and the arc of milk from a nipple, the details of these pictures are messy and majestic at the same time, which seems just about right.
