A Bjarne Melgaard Invasion at VFiles
Bjarne Melgaard‘s new installation, as part of a capsule collection for VFiles, is every bit as out there as its title, “Daddies Like You Don’t Grow on Palm Trees.” A Norwegian artist with an appreciation for the outré, Melgaard has made quite a few recent forays into fashion: he’s worked with the likes of Eckhaus Latta and Proenza Schouler, and even hatched his own collection in 2014, with pieces like the “Fat Girl Sweatsuit” and a silk dress in the shape of a checkbook making it into the last Whitney Biennial. At VFiles, he conjured up pastel pink hoodies and lavender patent leather bags, all riddled with Swiss cheese-like holes. Altogether, they make quite an impression, especially paired with nude cut-outs, reasonably disturbing mannequins, graffiti, and, of course, a fake palm tree. Naturally, Instagrammers took note.
