At Planned Parenthood’s Blowout 100th Anniversary Celebration, Meryl Streep, Sofia Coppola, and Scarlett Johansson Eagerly Awaited the Arrival of Hillary Clinton
On Tuesday evening, a star-studded crowd gathered at the massive converted sports complex Pier 36 in Manhattan’s South Street Seaport to toast a century of Planned Parenthood. The 100th anniversary gala, honoring Hillary Clinton and Shonda Rhimes, brought out activists, artists, actors, musicians, and some cross-section of the above, including Meryl Streep and America Ferrera, staunch Clinton campaigners, Halsey and Tegan and Sara, outspoken activists for LGBTQ rights and access to reproductive healthcare, and Sarah Sophie Flicker, the activist and performer who was a key organizer for the Women’s March on Washington in January. Sofia Coppola, Scarlett Johansson, Annette Bening, Tina Fey, and Julianne Moore also made appearances, while artists Cindy Sherman and Laurie Simmons, also in the audience, donated works that went up for auction towards the end of the evening. While many attendees impressed the gravity of the challenges facing Planned Parenthood even a century after its founding, the gala was also an evening of celebrating—especially because early reports of a budget deal that will go up for a vote Thursday looks to have spared Planned Parenthood in spite of an administration that has vowed to defund the organization.
