At Photo London 2016, the Icons Meet the Upstarts
This past weekend brought the second edition of the Photo London fair, comprised of over 80 galleries from as far off as Tehran and Tokyo gathered under one tony roof. Sprawling across the Somerset House on the Thames River, the fair showcased plenty of newer photographers: think Jérôme Sessini, who’s documented modern-day Cuba, and Anja Niemi, essentially Norway’s own Cindy Sherman. Still, at Photo London the old greats, like Helmut Newton, tend to dominate both the sales and the conversation. Take Cecil Beaton, who may have died in 1980, but still played double duty, with his own prints and as a cameo in the work of another pioneer, David Bailey. Here are all the highlights, across generations.
