Gucci’s Fall 2017 Collection Will Be the Only Good Thing Left After the Apocalypse
We wouldn’t have guessed that Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele was a doomsday prepper. But since taking the reigns in January 2015, he’s devoted himself to growing Gucci’s garden of earthly delights. And for anyone in the business of flora and fauna, not to mention bees, (they’re dying at an alarming rate, haven’t you heard?) one has to ask what we’re going to do in the future when the ice caps melt and winter looks like summer. This is precisely the question that artist Coco Capitan posed on the invitations for Gucci’s fall 2017 show in Milan on Wednesday, which took place in a post-apocalyptic greenhouse where Michele’s creatures could thrive. The collection, titled “The Alchemist’s Garden,” was an explosion of floral prints and motifs, per usual. Plus, some fanny packs, diamond bodysuits, and even happy trails spread throughout. But this season in particular, Michele cross-pollinated and inbred species and symbols from around the world. It was a fitting theme, seeing that the brand combined its men’s and women’s show for the first time. And it was also a perhaps a political statement beyond environmental awareness, proving how beautiful life can look when there are no borders.
