Glittery eye shadow may bring to mind dance recitals and showgirls, but thanks to designers like Joseph Altuzarra, whose fall runway featured models with glimmering lemon-lime lids, and Raf Simons, who went for sky blue, teal, and olive shades at Dior, a sparkly eye suddenly seems more It girl than drag queen. “There’s something kind of magical about it,” says the makeup artist James Kaliardos, who here used Giorgio Armani Beauty Eye & Brow Maestro in Gold and Auburn, and then upped the wattage with extra glitter sprinkled over lids and cheeks. “This is definitely more of a night look, but you don’t have to go all the way.” Kaliardos points to Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 film Cleopatra, who wears just a trace of glitter on top of her black eyeliner. “It’s subtle but catches the light in different ways—it’s kind of exciting.”

Beauty note: To really get your gleam on, add a touch of Urban Decay Heavy Metal Loose Glitter in Goldmine and Catfight.

What a Mouthful

On the Rodarte fall 2014 runway, glitter was everywhere: glimmering on coats, woven into turtlenecks, sparkling on kneesocks, and—perhaps most alluring—twinkling on models’ lips. Kaliardos whipped up “an ’80s-fairy-tale-movie look” for the occasion. “It was about the nostalgia of watching those princess movies when you were a kid,” says the makeup artist, who re-created the shimmery dusty rose lip color here by infusing Nars Audacious Lipstick in Dominique with pink, brown, and gold glitter. “We really had to pile it on, and using the different shades helped get us there,” Kaliardos explains. “That’s the funny thing about glitter on lips: It can be nearly invisible in a lip gloss, or it can be superintense.” We vote for the latter.
