A Starring Roll: Bumpits Are Back on the Red Carpet and the Runway

by Jane Larkworthy

A Starring Roll

In January, Katy Perry very nearly caused an Amazon meltdown when she revealed that a Bumpit was the secret behind—or, rather, underher Golden Globes coif. And at the couture shows in Paris, Sam McKnight hid wire “croissants” inside the plump, rolled ’dos at Chanel. Serge Normant has his own weapon. See how the stylist created the look–and his inspiration from over the years.

To create the mega-bun here, the stylist Serge Normant relied on banana-size foam inserts—and plenty of his Dream Big Instant Volumizing Spray. “To get this sculptural quality, you need a lot of texture,” says Normant, who pulled the hair into a ponytail, then teased the bejesus out of it before securing it with bobby pins and pulling a few strands loose. “It gives the style some grit. But do it very delicately. The last thing you want is to have to start all over again.”
