Backstage with Brandon Maxwell’s Disco Beauties at His Spring 2017 Show

For his Spring 2017 collection — just his third ever — designer Brandon Maxwell took staid colors like navy, olive, and the faintest pink and elevated them with elegant, ultra-feminine tailoring. A cadre of this season’s breakout models like Ari Westphal and Alanna Arrington and more established favorites like Adwoa Aboah, Lineisy Montero, and Maria Borges danced to Maxwell’s throwback soundtrack (the first chords of Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” opened the show), the sheen of gold glimmer around their eyes bringing to mind a disco aesthetic that the wide-legged jumpsuits and exaggerated gowns also recalled. Photographer Katie Thompson went behind the scenes to document the whole thing.
