Rarely Seen Intimate Photos of Young Grace Jones, Jerry Hall, and Karl Lagerfeld: The Instamatics of Antonio Lopez

by Fan Zhong

The late Antonio Lopez was by vocation a virtuosic fashion illustrator and by reputation a night owl of the first order, the life of parties in Paris and New York during the jetset 70’s, when he seduced everyone from Jessica Lange to Karl Lagerfeld, who was said to be smitten with Lopez and his longtime partner Juan Ramos. And as it turns out, Lopez also happened to be pretty deft with a camera, too. A new exhibition at Danziger Gallery in New York showcases his little-seen Instamatic pictures from the era, intimate snaps of young Jerry Hall, Grace Coddington, Pat Cleveland, Tina Chow, and Grace Jones, as well as the likes of Lagerfeld and the couturier Charles James, that are backlit by the energy of the era. And with a new documentary Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex Fashion & Disco on the way from director James Crump, that flame doesn’t seem to be dying out anytime soon.
