Alexander McQueen’s Fashion Fairytale Didn’t Have a Single Damsel in Distress
If there ever were a collection for strolling barefoot in a forest at midnight, this was it. For Fall 2017, Sarah Burton gave her typically bewitching collections for Alexander McQueen a slightly more sinister edge, mixing modern shapes and silhouettes with strong, armor-like details associated with a more medieval era. Yes, there was still plenty of the romanticism expected in a McQueen collection—a lacy, cut-out long-sleeved gown with a floaty handkerchief hem will surely be a red carpet favorite—but at the core of the show was strength over fragility: more knight in shining armor than damsel in distress. Tough, structured leather was paired with loose, corset-like stitching, while floor-length skirts incorporated chainmail-like netting. For those in want of a pant, look no further than Burton’s take on the pantsuit, double-breasted jackets and vests paired with perfectly tailored trousers. And for the post-battle celebrations? Gowns detailed with flora and fauna embroidery, feathered column dresses with celestial embellishments, and sheer, metallic frocks dripping in fringed detailing.
