Akris’s Spring 2017 Collection Was Inspired by Abstract Expressionism
Smart women are constantly seeking smart design—and in fashion, few brands live up to that challenge better than Akris, thanks to creative director Albert Kriemler. His thoughtful, sophisticated designs have long been inspired by the visual arts, and this season he adds iconic artist Carmen Herrera to his roster of standout collaborators. Their partnership came out of a 2015 visit to the Whitney Museum, where Kriemler was captivated by the piece Blanco y Verde by the Cuban-born Abstract Expressionist. The 101-year-old Herrera uses straight lines as the starting point for most of her paintings—in her words, “out of it comes everything.” As such, the Akris collection combines geometric shapes and architectural tailoring to create elongating silhouettes in a vibrant color palette. Here, a look at a few of the standouts from the spring collection—shot in a space inspired by Herrera’s work.
