Oscars 2020 Best Dressed: Timothée’s Tracksuit and an Elegant Political Gesture

by Andrea Whittle

Although none of our predictions from haute couture week came true, the 2020 Oscars red carpet did not disappoint. There were unexpected liberties taken with the dress code, political gestures elegantly rendered, and some exquisite male jewelry. Presenter Timothée Chalamet rolled up in a midnight blue Prada getup that was more tracksuit than tuxedo, accented with a vintage diamond and ruby Cartier pin. Another great pin moment happened on Best Actor nominee Antonio Banderas, who jazzed up a classic Dior tux with some sculptural diamonds on his lapel. Over a sheer black and gold lace gown, Natalie Portman wore a custom Dior cape embellished with the names of women directors whose films were snubbed by the Academy—an elegant marriage of style and protest, and the first of many instances over the course of the evening in which stars poked at the how far behind Hollywood still is when it comes to equality. Although many other attendees seemed to play it relatively safe this year, there were a few other standout looks, including a couple of black Chanel dresses and an excellent (if predictable) showing from our favorite goth queen Rooney Mara. Here’s who team W deemed best dressed at the 2020 Academy Awards.
