Despite the season’s inevitable loss — falling leaves, shorter days, and cooling temperatures — designer Shwetambari Mody is daydreaming of moments in bloom.
Shwetambari’s fall collection provides an opportunity to find comfort in the nature of change. A sense of calm is evoked with cloud-like sleeves, buttery silks, and soft velvets. Stopping to smell the flowers — despite the season — is made easy with striking bouquets of hand-painted floral prints in shades of aubergine and bright fuchsia. Silhouettes that resemble delicate petals find their light alongside organza and barely-buttoned-up shirts. Each piece is a reflection of new growth and reinvention — a breath of fresh air floats throughout skirts, tops, and unraveling loose layers.
The collection is tied together with an admiration for both New York, Mody’s current home, and Mumbai, her birthplace. Celebrating Shwetambari’s community of creators, a selection of capes and crop tops are embroidered in traditional Ghara, an Indian technique meticulously executed over weeks of work.
