Going Dutch at Art Basel Miami Beach

Of all the parties, shows, and events during Art Basel, the hottest ticket every year is the Aby Rosen and Samantha Boardman dinner at The Dutch. This year’s event didn’t disappoint, hosting celebrities and artists across every genre including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Owen Wilson, A-Rod, Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, Peter Marino, Heidi Klum and Vito Schnabel, Paris and Nicky Hilton, Daniel Neidich, Wendi Murdoch, Bob Shaye, China Chow and Tamara Mellon.

Boardman, always the gracious host, sparkled in red Marc Jacobs, while Alice and Olivia’s Stacey Bendet stunned in a vibrant gown she had made to resemble a painting by her friend Lola Schnabel. Pamela Golbin, curator of the Musée de la Mode at the Louvre in Paris, took the colorful route as well in a floral Giambattista Valli gown that she said felt, “light as a feather.” Peter Marino, on the other hand, rocked his usual biker daddy chic.

The evening’s conversations turned to art, naturally, with Tommy Hilfiger joking, “I already bought art—I bought a hotel!” (Hilfiger recently purchased The Raleigh in South Beach). Talking about the challenge of creating commercial art for buildings, Interior designer Thom Filicia explained that, “we actually make our own art.” And while he loves to buy work for his home, he said he doesn’t consider himself “a collector.” Bethenny Frankel, whose show is shooting in Miami and came for the weekend to “hang with friends,” said, “I’m very, very newly into [buying art]—I look to my friends to advise me.” She added that while she is famous for her business acumen, she doesn’t want her choices be all about monetary value: “With art, more than other things, for it not to be an investment, for it to be something I like.”

After the dinner, the crowd moved to The Wall for the Dom Pérignon-hosted after party Metamorphosis, where Alex Dellal, Stavros Niarchos, and Vito Schnabel traded art talk art for dancing on tables and drinking loads of champagne.
