Inspired By Shelly Beach in Australia
Wil Ariyamethe, the designer behind the swimwear label Thapelo Paris, takes us to the place that inspires her most.
What is your favorite beach? One of my favorites is Shelly Beach, on the Central Coast Great Lakes region in Sydney, Australia. It’s quiet, secluded and you have to walk for about 10 minutes through a forest track to get to it. I love it as you hear the birds and insects all around you walking down and then all of a sudden, you hit paradise. (And a few naked people! There’s a nudist section.)
What’s the local secret? If you’re in the area, go to Wallis Lakes. We go on a boat, camp on the edge of the lake, and wakeboard—my husband Pierre also likes to fish. One of the best things is to wake up and take in the serenity, and then you jump in water. It’s most amazing start to the day! There are also some great surf beaches around and local markets with organic produce.
How does it inspire your work? I live in Paris, so the contrast between the two places is nice. The relaxed, calm beauty of Shelly beach is what Thapelo Paris is all about!
What is your favorite thing to wear to the beach? I love cotton beach towels and Rondini sandals. I don’t go naked and I’m always testing our swims and cover ups from Thapelo Paris! I’ve been using La Roche-Posay’s Anthélios invisible sunscreen range and paw paw ointment. I also like to have a picnic basket with leftovers from big family feasts. I don’t bring any books—there’s too much to catch up on! It’s a time just for swimming, sleeping on the beach and chatting with friends.
