Teyana Taylor Wore a Wetsuit to Hood By Air

As you do.

For the Spring 2017 show of Shayne Oliver’s Hood By Air, the collection took a dual-pronged approach: A series of videos streamed on PornHub’s Snapchat (one of the show’s sponsors, and whose logos were emblazoned across many designs), while models filed down the runway wearing Oliver’s typically irreverent, sometimes subversive designs. A shoe with two feet; windbreakers with “Never Trust a Church Girl” scrawled across the back; a beauty look that was the product of too much vaseline smeared over the models’ faces and hair. And in the front row to take it all in were fashion week regulars like Hari Nef, Jaden Smith and girlfriend Sarah Snyder, Naomi Campbell, and fashion’s newest favorite (thanks, in no small part, to her role in Kanye West’s video for “Fade”), Teyana Taylor and husband Iman Shumpert. Naturally, they were wearing Hood By Air. Less naturally, Taylor was wearing a Hood By Air wetsuit, with rubber boots. Ready to make a splash.

Who: Teyana Taylor.

When: Sunday, September 11.

Where: Front row at the Hood By Air Spring 2017 show during New York Fashion Week.

What: A grey wetsuit by Hood By Air, with black, thigh-high rubber wading boots and a beige cropped jacket.

Why: Sure, it might have been Alexander Wang’s show that had a lock on beachy, surfer style, but Teyana Taylor is the one clearly owning the look. She combines a wetsuit — functional! utilitarian! — with equally ocean-ready boots. We always appreciate a woman who can stick to a theme. Taylor has quickly become one of our favorite front-row fixtures this fashion week; her Minions x Baja East look was pure joy, while here, she’s making the most of the last days of summer, proving that a wetsuit makes a great beach-to-street look. Plus, her beachy waves embrace one of the breakout trends of the Spring 2017 season — as Kim Kardashian can attest.
