Saint Laurent Brings French Modernism to Maximalist Miami
Its second store in South Florida, which opened just in time for Art Basel, is a minimalist departure from Miami’s more is more approach.
Just in time for the art and fashion glitterati to descend on Miami for Art Basel, Saint Laurent opened the doors to its new store in the area, this time in the Design District, the shopping destination where the biggest names in luxury have set up shop in recent years.
Not too far from the Dior and Tom Ford stores, Saint Laurent is the first major Kering brand in the District, though not the label’s first in the city; its very first store in South Florida opened in Bal Harbour Shops four years ago.
The store happened to open as new creative director Anthony Vaccarello takes helm of the historic Parisian house and he was in town for the occasion, which coincided with Basel and a new sexually provocative exhibit by Jeffrey Deitch and Larry Gagosian and curated Diana Widmaier Picasso.
Comprised of two floors and black and white marble covering the floors, walls, and staircase, Saint Laurent’s shop pays homage to 20th century French Modernism, so that it’s a real departure from Miami’s otherwise maximalist inclinations.
The Design Art deco materials are a defining aspect of the store, and the chic brass benches and metal rails add to an air of minimalist sophistication.
Pièce De Résistance Anthony Vaccarello’s debut collection – leather dresses with ’80s inspired sleeves; off-the-shoulder and one-shoulder dresses and shirts; barely (we mean barely)-there minis. And YSL logo shoes and earrings, another riff on the ’80s.
