Martin Margiela’s White Night
Tuesday night's party celebrating the elusive designer's collaboration with H&M, Maison Martin Margiela with H&M, was chock full of color and celebrities.
As any fashion insider knows, Martin Margiela has an affinity for white. So naturally Tuesday night’s party celebrating the elusive designer’s collaboration with H&M, Maison Martin Margiela with H&M, was chock full of the color (or lack thereof, if we’re being technical). The nine story, artfully run-down brick tower of 5 Beekman Street was transformed into a performance art spectacle with squares of white sand filling gallery spaces on each floor and upon which dancers choreographed by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker rolled around like svelte snow angels, wearing the clothes from the new collection, slowly making their way from room to room and up to the top level. Think of it like Sleep No More, fashion style. There were celebrities, of course, in this case Kanye West, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mena Suvari and Julianne Moore among their ranks; plenty of bubbly, which model Hanne Gaby Odiele happily enjoyed, toting around a bottle like it was the latest accessory, and the opportunity for those brave enough to stand the crowds to shop the collection, which goes on sale November 15. Just before 11, event planners dumped a New Year’s Eve ball’s worth of confetti from the glass domed ceiling onto a perfectly rectangular white sand box laid out on the first floor. And then the party continued on.
