Karlie Kloss, the Real Woman Who Can Do Both, Wins the Red Carpet and a DVF Award
Supermodel, baker, and coding aficionada Karlie Kloss was honored with the Inspiration Award at the 2017 DVF Awards — while wearing a luminous DVF sheath.
On Thursday night, the United Nations opened its doors to a different crowd than usually frequents its halls. A variety of fashion and culture luminaries, including Kate Bosworth, Tracee Ellis Ross, Allison Williams, and, of course, Diane Von Furstenberg herself, descended on the UN for the annual DVF Awards, honoring British primatologist Jane Goodall and supermodel-turned-activist baker Karlie Kloss. And while celebrating charitable and humanitarian work, the DVF Awards were also a kind of celebration of the namesake designer herself. She handed over the creative reins of her eponymous label to Jonathan Saunders, the Scottish designer, last year; last night, many of Saunders’s inaugural, sparkly designs appeared on the red carpet.
The new DVF, which underwent a quiet but notable rebranding under Saunders’s guidance, is quickly becoming a go-to for red carpets — especially those of the lower-key, more informal variety. But DVF designs were particularly plentiful at Thursday night’s awards, leading to stiff competition for the standout look of the night. Still, it should come as little surprise that honoree Karlie Kloss, supermodel, was also a winner on the step-and-repeat.
Who: Karlie Kloss.
When: Thursday, April 6.
Where: The DVF Awards honoring Kloss with the Inspiration Award at the United Nations in New York, New York.
What: A royal blue metallic Diane Von Furstenberg sheath dress with long sleeves and a demure, ankle-length hem paired with silver Christian Louboutin pumps.
Why: When stepping onto the stage to present her acceptance speech, Kloss removed her stratospheric silver Louboutins, bringing her down to a more mortal six-feet-two-inches. Not that going barefoot would really affect her transcendent look — her liquid blue DVF dress speaks volumes on it own. Together, the metallic silver heels and iridescent blue dress gives off a superhuman, space-age vibe, a reminder that Kloss is the true woman who can do both.
