Instagram Stars Prefer to See Life Through Colored Lenses
Everyone from Bella Hadid to A$AP Rocky can’t get enough of the tinted sunglasses trend.
We’re seeing color for spring 2017.
Literally, tinted lenses are everywhere—from the runways to social media. And as with most trends these days, this one can be traced back to Alessandro Michele’s colorful Gucci collections. For Spring 2017, an all-yellow Big Bird look walked the runway paired with bright yellow sunglasses, as well as an oversized, square pink pair bedazzled with pearls. You name it, Gucci’s got it—from green to purple. Plus, 70s-style orange-tinted lenses, à la John Legend or Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing, have been a staple for the past few seasons.
In sum, thanks in part to Michele, Grandma chic is here to stay, whether that means stealing her crochet work or her sunglasses. So, it might be time to go pay her a visit.
Before Gucci, celebrities flaunted the trend. Back in the ’90s, everyone from Gwen Stefani to Mariah Carey to Jennifer Lopez wore hued lenses ranging from pink to yellow. It was a way to simultaneously shield themselves in public and also stand out in a crowd. Not to mention that it adds a little flare to any stepping-out outfit. And with the resurgence of both retro and ’90s glam today, It girls like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid are following suit with today’s trendiest tinted lenses.
For Spring 2017, popular eyewear brands like Oliver Peoples, Gentle Monster, Retrosuperfuture, are catching on to the resurgence of the trend, providing Instagram catnip to influencers like Sofia Richie, Anias Gallagher, and even A$AP Rocky—a core member of the Gucci Gang as well. It makes sense that Instagram stars are catching on to the trend, as tinted lenses allow them to see life through a filter, albeit a rose-tinted one.
