Evan Rachel Wood is no stranger to the Golden Globes—2017’s ceremony marks her third nomination and her sixth time attending—but she went for unexpected when it came to this year’s choice of outfit. In a move that set her apart from the gown-wearing crowd, Wood opted for a sleek custom suit by Altuzarra with pussy-bow accent, but this wasn’t any old tux.

Wood told Ryan Seacrest on the E! News red carpet that her ensemble was a nod to the vintage Hollywood menswear trend and David Bowie, who would have been 70 years old on Jan. 8.

“This year I’m going with homage to Marlene Dietrich in Victor/Victoria and David Bowie because it’s his birthday,” she said.

The star also tweeted a tribute to the iconic late singer earlier today.

Wood said she’s worn a gown in every other appearance she’s made at the Golden Globes, but much like her Westworld character—who could forget when Dolores ditched that blue prairie dress for slacks and an attitude?—she also noted that she hoped her choice in outfit would empower any young girls watching and show the world that feminine dresses aren’t required on the red carpet.

“I want every girl to know she can wear a suit,” Wood said.
