It’s been a good year for Rodarte: After a bit of a rough patch, the California designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy presented a standout collection for both its 10th anniversary and fall 2016. The pair kept it up this season, too, as showcased just a few weeks ago in New York: Their spring 2017 collection was the stuff dreams are made of, ethereal as ever with no shortage of sequins, tulle, lace, or intricate embroidery; but still somewhat pared down with a palette of mostly black and white. In short, it was a natural fit for Emma Stone, who’s also been having a great year thanks to her new film, La La Land. Starring Stone and Ryan Gosling, it’s been getting rave reviews, and though the press tour has been ongoing since August, the actress somehow hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down with her hits on the red carpet.

Who: Emma Stone.

When: Thursday, October 6.

Where: The 39th Annual Mill Valley Film Festival in Mill Valley, California.

What: A ruffled lace dress from Rodarte’s spring 2017 collection.

Why: Stone got started back in August with La La Land, in which she plays an aspiring actress alongside Gosling’s jazz musician, when she stepped out in embroidered ruffles and florals by Giambattista Valli at the Venice Film Festival. It’s a look she riffed on again at another festival over a month later, keeping it fresh in Mill Valley, California in a Rodarte dress which just made its debut at the spring 2017 shows in New York a few weeks ago. Monochromatic but accented with a cascade of ruffles, it’s complete with a subtle hint of the heart motif that’s been showing up again and again on the runways over the last month, from Proenza Schouler’s décolletés in New York to Maria Grazia Chiuri’s tarot card-inspired accents in Paris for her debut outing at Dior.
