Emma Stone Has Us Envying the California Sun
With the announcement of the Independent Spirit Awards nominees, awards season is getting into full swing. Though her film wasn’t eligible for this first major accolade (it honors films made on budgets under $20 million), Emma Stone is widely considered an early Best Actress contender for her performance in the Damien Chazelle film La La Land, in which she stars alongside Ryan Gosling. The film already premiered to much fanfare, and Stone has been regularly hosting smaller screenings throughout the fall — including, most recently, an appearance in Los Angeles, where she wore a sweet sundress by Rosie Assoulin that made us envious of the California sun in the midst of an east coast cold snap.
Who: Emma Stone.
When: Monday, November 21.
Where: A special screening of La La Land hosted by Bulleit in Los Angeles, California.
What: A ruched-bodice sundress from Rosie Assoulin’s Spring 2017 collection with a contrasting floral skirt and nude, pointy-toed pumps.
Why: Designer Rosie Assoulin’s Spring 2017 presentation was all about beach vibes in the midst of political turbulence. As she explained back in September, it was based on the Taryn Simon series of “impossible bouquets,” photographs of flower arrangements from political events. The collection contrasted the dark tone of the 2016 presidential election with a more idealistic — beachy, breezy, casual — outlook. In the original collection, the dress came armed with floaty cap sleeves, like little capes for each shoulder, but Stone foregoes this detail in favor of something a bit simpler. (She also foregoes the giant straw bucket hat that Assoulin showed accessorizing the dress.) It retains a bit of its easy beachy aesthetic, but in its stripped-down form it’s still perfect for a low-key red carpet. Topped off with loose, undone hair, the look has us dreaming of beach weather on the cusp of Thanksgiving.
