Like Her “Queen” Tilda Swinton, Anya Taylor-Joy Has an Eye for Offbeat Fashion
Milan Fashion Week opened with Gucci’s Spring 2017 show, a smoky velvet nightclub of an event wreathed in pink and gauze. Swaddled in ruffles, embroidery, and fur, models trudged down a red-and-green striped runway lined with green stars. And on the sidelines, a whole club of Gucci-clad It girls new and old alike. Fashion bloggers Susie Bubble, Bryan Boy, and Tina Leung huddled in one corner; singer and cellist Kelsey Lu, in a red Gucci suit, sat with French punk icon Soko; gamines like Makenzie Leigh, Lou Doillon, and Dakota Johnson floated amid a crowd that also included Serena Williams. Then, there was Anya Taylor-Joy, the British-Argentine model-turned-actress, star of the breakout indie hit The Witch and the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan film Split. Taylor-Joy has been making selective, periodical appearances this fashion month, also popping up front-row at Burberry’s first see-now, buy-now extravaganza. She may have traded in the runway for the red carpet, but that doesn’t mean she’s foregoing the fashion world entirely. And, front-row at the Milanese show of the season, she fits right in among Alessandro Michele‘s well-heeled devotees.
Who: Anya Taylor-Joy.
When: Wednesday, September 21.
Where: Front-row at Gucci Spring 2017 at Scalo Farini in Milan, Italy.
What: A matching patterned silk skirt-and-jacket combination by Gucci with the brand’s now-trademark red platform heels (also boasted by several other front-row stars at the show).
Why: Young, cute, predisposed to pulling off adventurous, offbeat sartorial choices, Taylor-Joy makes a perfect addition to Michele’s clutch of Gucci girls. Resplendent in a silk Gucci garden, Taylor-Joy pulls off a look that has a lot going on, between the bold primary colors and the splashes of florals across the silk pleated skirt and bomber. Like Tilda Swinton, who Taylor-Joy described as her “queen” in a recent interview with W, Taylor-Joy has an eye for the offbeat.
