25 of the “Stereotypes” That Vetements Is Trying to Tackle For Fall 2017
For his fall 2017 Vetements men’s wear show at Paris Fashion Week, the designer Demna Gvasalia played with the intrinsic link between fashion and identity; appearances and stereotypes. It began with the fashion show invites, which came in the form of mixed-up fake ID cards bearing the names of various editors, buyers, and celebrities. A British editor, for example, was pictured as a grandmother from Nuremberg. As for the collection, each look was labeled in the show notes as a different stereotype, ranging from “Couch Potato” to “Bro” to “Emo,” who wore a custom leather jacket with “Queers still here” and “Not your resident” painted on it. The message was clearly that difference is what makes us great, not division — a sweater bearing the flag of the European Union being perhaps the clearest symbol of this stance.
