“Keep Austin Weird.” That’s the common refrain you most often hear in Texas’ cutest college town, a reminder that, despite the annual pilgrimages here by thousands of interlopers for various festivals, Austin itself ought to embrace its independent streak. For the most part, visitors abide by the local rules: throughout town during the first leg of South by Southwest 2017, the style seen on the streets was heavily informed by vintage store finds, immaculately beat-up cowboy boots, Coachella-ready wares with just a soupçon of whimsy, and a take-no-prisoners disposition that’s becoming of the great state of Texas.
