Ruffles, Rhinestones, and Rock ‘n’ Roll: It Must Be Saint Laurent
Saint Laurent is still in a rebuilding phase following the departure of Hedi Slimane nearly one year ago. For his sophomore collection since taking the artistic reins of the house, Anthony Vaccarello embraced the idea, showing his Fall 2017 collection outside the YSL Paris headquarters which are, quite literally, under construction. Made into a makeshift amphitheater with marble stadium seating, the crowd—including a front row filled with fashion royalty, including Kate Moss, Catherine Devenue, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Amber Valetta—was treated to a floor-shaking, beat-pounding experience, all while in the midst of an impromptu Paris rainstorm. But when the first look came down the runway—a patent leather utilitarian jacket lined with just the slightest hint of lace and paired with slouchy boots—it was clear: these clothes deserved a concert-like backdrop. Sparkles, origami-like ruffles, and exaggerated shoulders were statement-making details that ran throughout the collection, and as an extension of his evening-heavy debut for spring, Vaccarello also presented plenty of options for day, including chunky knits, corduroy jackets, and even some plain denim.
