STRONGER TOGETHER

We Will Not Be Silenced: Political Statements Hit New York Fashion Week Street Style

by Caroline Grosso

This New York Fashion Week, the industry banded together in their message of resistance, both on and off the runway. Called to action by the current political climate, designers like Prabal Gurgung and Jonathan Simkhai created and shared slogan tees including ones that read “This is what a feminist looks like” and “Feminist AF”–which many an editor and blogger wore proudly in the streets the next day. Some even put their money where their mouth was–Simkhai donated $5 to Planned Parenthood for each person who attended his show, and the CFDA is contributing $5 for every share of their “Fashion Stands with Planned Parenthood” pin on social media. As Emily Ratajkowski proudly shared a picture of her pin, other It-girls and editors posed for their own photo opp outside of Adam Lippes’s Washington Square Park apartment, where an enormous red sign declaring “Adam Lippes Stands With Planned Parenthood” proudly hung.
