After 2016’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy, the 2017 Academy Awards promise to be a refreshingly diverse ceremony: Among the night’s most promising and buzzed-about honorees are Moonlight, Barry Jenkins’s coming-of-age narrative about a young black man coming to terms with his sexuality in the projects of Miami, and Hidden Figures, the Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe three-hander about the black women mathematicians working behind the scenes at a nascent NASA in the lead-up to the agency’s first successful mission. Elsewhere, Damien Chazelle’s sophomore film La La Land, which swept the Golden Globes, promises to have a strong showing on Feb. 26, and Kenneth Lonergan’s devastating Manchester by the Sea sees nominations for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Picture, and Best Director. Among the lesser-expected nominees are Meryl Streep for Florence Foster Jenkins and Nicole Kidman for Lion, while Amy Adams was snubbed for dual work in Nocturnal Animals and Arrival. Get to know the beautiful stars of the year’s best films — now, with Academy Award nominations to show for it — here.
