Get to Know Photographer Ian David Baker, J.W. Anderson’s Latest Collaborator

If you weren’t among the 599 people to get your hands on the first edition of Jonathan Anderson‘s new Workshops project—an archival photo book with Spanish magazine maven Luis Venegas—you’re in luck: Anderson’s next Workshops collaboration features a much more accessible range of patchwork blankets, scarves, T-shirts, tote bags, and hoodies, all available online. More importantly, though, they’re all emblazoned with the black-and-white photos of Ian David Baker, the London-based photographer who got his start documenting ’80s youth culture and later gained a following for his intimate nude portraiture. His weightier scenes, like an unsettling police barrier at a 1980 gay pride parade, were wisely exempted from the merch treatment; they’re available instead both as gelatin prints and in a book where you can see the designer’s hand-selected favorites—if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one of the 500 copies, that is. Still, Baker’s raw approach comes through in the details of more lighthearted items, too: All the edges were left frayed, even on the blankets.
