High Art: Ed Ruscha’s Mountain Prints Head For the Alps

by Steph Eckardt

Ed Ruscha

Sandwiched between the Alps and the Jura mountains, Gagosian’s Geneva outpost could hardly be a more fitting location for the first standalone exhibit of Ed Ruscha‘s mountain prints. It’s a series that Ruscha, long fascinated by landscape, first took up over 15 years ago, considering them an “archetypal stage set” and “perfect foil” to the pithy text that typically dominates his work. Up through the end of May, the show also sheds insight into Ruscha’s process, with experimental proofs and run-throughs from the five-year period he spent transferring the peaks from paintings to prints, starting in 2010.
