Dakota Johnson of 50 Shades Loves Gucci and Old Hollywood Glamour
The daughter of Don Johnson and actress Melanie Griffith, herself the daughter of actress Hitchcock blonde Tippi Hedren, Dakota Johnson’s Hollywood bona fides go back several generations. The 27-year-old 50 Shades actress first garnered attention for her role in The Social Network, in which she played a Stanford student whose one-night stand with Sean Parker leads him to Facebook—and, by extension, to Mark Zuckerberg. Since then, she’s become best known as Anastasia Steele, the protagonist of Twilight fanfiction-turned-big-budget franchise 50 Shades of Grey, whose second installment, 50 Shades Darker, is out this weekend. Amid it all, Johnson has made time for forays into the fashion world, too—she has appeared front-row at Chanel Métiers D’Art and Dior, and she, like Hari Nef, Jared Leto, and Florence Welch, is among the cadre of muses to Gucci designer Alessandro Michele. See her greatest hits on the red carpet—including, naturally, a lot of Gucci—here.
For one of her earliest red carpet appearances, Johnson went with a tailored, menswear-inspired look, complete with a bow tie.

Two years later, she had moved on to the old-school glamorous sihouettes that still define her red carpet aesthetic, here with added feathers for embellishment.

She’s always had a soft spot for sparkles and daring flashes of skin.

For the 2015 Oscars, Johnson went old Hollywood in a deep red column gown.

Off film duty, Johnson instead appeared at Dior during Paris Fashion Week Fall 2015, establishing herself as a winner on the red carpet and the front row.

While her tastes have tended lately towards the Italians — Valentino, Gucci — here, she goes fully French in a neat tweed suit.

For the premiere of Black Mass, a more architecturally inclined look, here by Balenciaga.

Johnson always returns to natural-waist, long-sleeved and full-skirted Gucci designs.

Again with long sleeves and a full, floor-length skirt, Johnson celebrates Michael Kors’s new store opening.

When it comes time to promote a new film, she’s always back in Alessandro Michele’s corner.

And throughout it all, she’s demonstrated a penchant for red dresses and red lips.

Those fantastical prints Alessandro Michele is so fond of turned out to be the perfect uniform for the ‘Manus x Machina’ Costume Institute Gala.

Again red, again long sleeves, again with a natural waist. Johnson knows the silhouettes that work for her.

Daring yet romantic, this Valentino gown paired with subtle hair and a dark rose lip was just the thing for the new 50 Shades premiere.

For the premiere tour of 50 Shades Darker, Johnson has selected romantic looks with a twist. Here, a tumble of ruffles and tiered skirt make the whole look just a little twisted.

For the most recent premiere, Johnson ventured outside her comfort zone. The sea creature-patterned Alexander McQueen gown features poofy, princess sleeves and a wide neckline.
